FR25 HA Guided City Tour in Dunkirk with HAS
11 mars 2025The French students have prepared a city tour of Dunkirk to introduce their correspondents to the town where they are staying.
Starting with the statue of Jean Bart on the Place Jean Bart, they researched the town's major sites :
-religious sites : Saint-Eloi church, the little chapel
-historical sites: the belfry, the Leughenaer tower, the Porte de la Marine, Operation Dynamo, the Port Museum
-public places : the town hall.
Just after discovering the Lycée Jean Bart with a musical welcome from the music club and a few ice-breaking games, the students are divided into different groups of mixed countries. They are given a quiz entitled "Dunkerque yesterday and today" which they have to complete as the city tour progresses and they are taken to the different sites.
Once they arrive at each site, the French students present the history of the place, the biography of a past or present person linked to the place, they finish by telling them about a fun fact related to the place, and finally they help their correspondents to complete the quiz : Dunkirk yesterday and today”. They are asked different questions based on old photos of the city representing the places they are in, which they can answer thanks to the presentations that the French students have given them or thanks to the signs in front of these places that present their history. At the end of the quiz, they are asked to draw the flag of Dunkirk that they have seen in different places during their city tour.
The students learn a lot about the history of Dunkirk and are both attentive and interested. They get to know each other(for the first time with Portuguese students) in an informal and easy way.In particular, they learn that Dunkirk is an important port and had a huge role during World War II and that Jean Bart was a pirate at the time of Louis XIV and saved Dunkirk so he is considered as a hero. They understand the meaning of the expression "spirit of dunkerk" when they realise that the city's unique history has shaped the face of its territory and nurtured its ability to mobilise and build the future together. The corsair Jean Bart and Operation Dynamo embodies this region's ability to face up to events, bounce back and rebuild.
