ES24 HA Tallinn Tour
11 déc. 2024On a winter afternoon, our Erasmus+ teacher group embarked on a cultural journey through Tallinn's historic center. Starting from Tallinn English College, we explored the medieval Old Town, with its narrow cobblestone streets and architectural treasures. The walking tour included viewing platforms offering panoramic vistas of the city's distinctive red rooftops and spires, the ancient city walls, and historic churches that have shaped Tallinn's skyline for centuries.
The tour provided a perfect introduction to Estonian heritage and Tallinn's unique position as a crossroads between Eastern and Western European influences. Following the Old Town exploration, we visited the impressive Kiek in de Kök tower and museum. The highlight was our guided tour through the mysterious Bastion Passages - a 17th-century tunnel system built beneath the old bastions. In these atmospheric underground corridors, teachers experienced how these tunnels served multiple purposes throughout history: from military defense to WWII shelters and Cold War bunkers.
As a result of this cultural immersion, participants gained a deeper appreciation of Tallinn's significant place in European history and its successful preservation of medieval heritage. The experience sparked meaningful discussions about how similar historical sites could be incorporated into cross-curricular teaching approaches. Teachers from different countries shared perspectives on how their own local heritage compared to Estonia's, leading to ideas for future collaborative projects centered around cultural preservation and European identity.
