PT 25 HA - Travelling through historic heritage of Leiria Region

 Students were invited to explore the region’s cultural heritage through virtual tours of the Monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça.​

They conducted a research on the unique architectural features, historical relevance, and the legends associated with these iconic monuments, such as the story of King Pedro and Inês de Castro. This initial exploration allowed them to contextualize the religious, political, and artistic significance of these UNESCO World Heritage Sites.​

Students also visited several emblematic sites and landmarks in the surrounding region. These included Leiria Castle, a medieval fortress that played a strategic role in Portuguese history; the Paper Mill Museum, where they learned about traditional papermaking techniques; the coastal town of Nazaré, famous for its giant waves and fishing traditions; and the historic village of Óbidos, known for its well-preserved walls and literary festivals.​

Students took photographs, gathered historical data related to each monument and site. This hands-on approach fostered curiosity, critical thinking, and an appreciation for tangible and intangible heritage.​

The collected material was later used to create flyers and videos.​

This interdisciplinary activity highlighted the value of integrating History, Geography, English, and the Arts, and demonstrated how local heritage can serve as a meaningful and engaging resource for project-based learning.
