FR25 CC Cine Debate – I am Greta

Students gathered at Studio 43 to watch the film ‘I am Greta’ which is a German-Swedish documentary directed by Nathan Grossman in 2020, devoted to the activities of the young environmental activist Greta for a year (from August 2018 to September 2019).

After the screening, they were divided into 10 groups of different countries and had to create a poster based on one of the aspects of the film, referring to specific scenes. Here are the instructions given to each group :  4 key scenes from the film : Which ones ?  Why ? - Portrait of Greta Thunberg in 4 characteristics in the film : Which ones ? In which scenes ?- 6 causes of climate change in the film : What causes ? In which scenes? - 6 consequences of climate change in the film: What consequences ? In which scenes?  - 5 personalities Greta Thunberg met in the film : Who are they? How is each meeting presented in the film ? - 5 Greta Thunberg’s emotions in the film : Which ones ? In which scenes? - 5 Greta Thunberg’s speeches in the film : Where ? When ? In front of what audience ? What arguments ? For what purposes ?  - 6 arguments defended by Greta Thunberg to denounce politicians : What arguments ? In which scenes ? - The role of social media : 3 advantages and 3 disadvantages. In which scenes ? - 6 reactions from young viewers to this film. Which ones ? In which scenes ?

They discussed and agreed on the arguments they would put forward, chose the scenes that would support them, and then summarised on a poster their interpretation of the from the instructions they had been given.

The intention behind screening this film was to motivate and inspire students through the attitude and struggle of the main character, in the hope that watching such a film would strengthen their personal motivation to combat the effects of climate change. This approach demonstrated how powerful cinema can be as a tool for encouraging critical thinking and sparking constructive dialogue on pressing societal challenges.
