The activity was structured as a three-phase learning path focused on Palermo’s urban evolution and sustainability. During Phase 1, students took part in a guided tour (Via Notarbartolo/Via Libertà) and compared historical photographs with modern ones they took themselves to analyze architectural and environmental changes. During Phase 2, starting from the observation of the urban and coastal fabric—also viewed from above from Montepellegrino—they identified the key pillars of sustainability, translating them into illustrative posters. In Phase 3, also inspired by the redevelopment of the Molo Trapezoidale, the students, divided in groups, analyzed the critical issues of the school's neighborhood and redesigned it according to sustainable criteria (mobility, green spaces, services). A mirroring journey that successfully connects past, present, and future.
Students deepened their knowledge of the historical and environmental evolution of Palermo, developing a greater awareness of the relationship between urban transformation, sustainability, heritage protection, and the culture of legality.
Through observation, analysis, and collaborative design activities, they improved their communication, project-planning, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, fostering their growth as active and responsible citizens.
The process resulted in the creation of photographic comparisons of urban transformations, posters on sustainability, and a sustainable redevelopment proposal for the school neighborhood. The works have been collected in a virtual board and can be examined at the following link: https://canva.link/3msklrt59wba9mf
