Critical Perspectives on Leadership and Public Image: Exploring National Historical Figures

In this activity, students explored the intersection of history, media, and public perception by preparing presentations on notable historical figures from their own countries. The focus was placed on individuals who, during their lifetimes or posthumously, had been widely admired and idealized — often through the intentional construction of a cult of personality.

Prior to the activity, students received detailed instructions and criteria to guide their work. Each student selected a prominent public or political figure regarded as charismatic and influential, and whose image had been shaped by propaganda, media portrayal, and public adoration.

In their presentations, students were required to:

  • Present a structured biography of the chosen figure, including key dates, life events, and historical background.

  • Highlight the figure’s major achievements and explain their impact on national or international affairs.

  • Analyze the socio-political context in which the figure rose to prominence.

  • Examine the development of the cult of personality, focusing on:

    • The role of propaganda (visual, written, spoken)

    • The influence of media in shaping public perception

    • The use of symbols, rituals, and public ceremonies

    • Public sentiment and how admiration was fostered or enforced

This activity aimed not only to deepen students’ understanding of their national history, but also to foster critical thinking about how historical narratives are constructed and disseminated. By questioning the mechanisms behind public admiration and image-making, students developed media literacy and historical awareness.

Moreover, the task provided opportunities to strengthen key 21st-century skills. Students improved their research competencies, digital literacy, and oral communication through the process of sourcing information, evaluating materials, creating digital presentations, and delivering their findings to their peers in a clear and engaging manner.
