Identity Mapping Workshop: Exploring the Question “Who Am I?”

This activity was designed to encourage participants to engage in structured self-reflection, deepen their self-awareness, and foster interpersonal understanding within the group. It combined individual introspection with creative expression and collaborative dialogue.

The session began with a personal brainstorming task. Each participant was asked to reflect on the question "Who Am I?" and write down 6–10 descriptors, including personal characteristics, emotional tendencies, social roles, values, beliefs, and aspirations. This stage emphasized authenticity and individual voice, inviting participants to consider different dimensions of their identity.

Next, students organized their responses into thematic categories such as:

  • Personality traits (e.g., kind, curious, introverted)

  • Hobbies and interests (e.g., playing the piano, hiking)

  • Cultural or family background

  • Social roles and relationships (e.g., daughter, friend, teammate)

  • Beliefs and values (e.g., honesty, equality)

  • Life goals and dreams

Using these categories as a framework, participants created colorful mind maps on A3 or A4 paper. In the center of each map, they placed the phrase “Who I Am,” and from there, they branched outward to illustrate the multiple layers of their identity. Students were encouraged to personalize their maps with colors, symbols, and drawings, allowing them to express individuality through both content and design.

To conclude, students shared selected parts of their mind maps with the class or in small groups. This final stage invited open discussion and active listening, fostering empathy and appreciation for the diverse experiences and self-perceptions within the group. The activity not only helped participants better understand themselves, but also built a sense of connection and mutual respect among peers.
