IT25 Visit to Paceco Salt Pans, Salt museum and Archaeological museum Lilibeo - Baglio Anselmi in Marsala
04 juin 2025The planned weekly day trip started from the visit of the Paceco salt pans and the salt museum. The participants had the chance to visit an evocative place where the culture of salt has shaped the territory in the wake of a centuries-old tradition passed down through generations.
A rare record of a heavily man-made production environment with strict respect for nature. Thanks to a guided tour, the students retraced the stages and events of a centuries-long history, discovering the harmonies of an area, which unites sea and land.
In addition, the excursion helped to understand the high cultural value of an ancient industry, which is still relevant today, that of saliculture.
After visiting the museum, despite the unfavorable weather forecast, it was possible to have a short walk around the surrounding salt pans, through a picturesque and colourful atmosphere.
The following visit was at the archaeological museum Lilibeo in Marsala The museum seat of the "Lilibeo" archaeological park is the Baglio Anselmi, a nineteenth-century factory for the production of Marsala wine.
Here the students were guided by an english speaking guide to the discovery of a lot of Punic find, mostly from the Island of Mozia, a punic colony, and the wrecks of a Punic ship and a late Roman ship, found in the waters off Marsala.
Participants gained knowledge of the historical and environmental importance of salt production in the Paceco Salt Pans, including the ecological value of the area (e.g., bird habitats, biodiversity) and recognized salt not only as a resource but as a cultural and economic pillar in Mediterranean history.
At the Lilibeo Museum, participants deepened their understanding of Punic civilizations, especially the role of Marsala and Mozia in Mediterranean trade and warfare. On a
whole, students reflected on the balance between environmental conservation (at the salt pans) and heritage preservation (in both museums), seeing how these intersect in real-world contexts, gaining environmental and historical awareness.
