SB25 HA Archaeology as Storytelling
16 oct. 2025The workshop Archaeology as Storytelling was conducted by Professor Marko Janković, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Archaeology at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. Building upon the introductory lecture From Belgrade to Singidunum: Exploring the Roman Heritage of the City, this practical session provided participants with an opportunity to experience the interpretative dimension of archaeology through interactive and collaborative learning.
During the workshop, participants were presented with a selection of archaeological objects representing various aspects of Roman daily life. Professor invited the participants to observe, analyze, and interpret each object, encouraging them to speculate about its purpose, function, and the social group that might have used it. Through guided discussion, participants learned how material remains can reveal stories about ancient societies — their organization, beliefs, technologies, and cultural values.
The activity highlighted the role of observation, inference, and creativity in the process of archaeological interpretation.
By transforming objects into narrative prompts, the workshop illustrated how educators can use material culture to engage learners in critical thinking and storytelling about the past. The dynamic and participatory format of the session fostered curiosity, collaboration, and intercultural dialogue among the group of 14 teachers from seven different EU countries.
