IT26 HA CAE - EXPLORING PALERMO MARKETS WITH THE 5 SENSES - Field game at the market 

The students were divided into groups and each member was assigned a specific role (photo reporter, note writer, time keeper, spokesperson, sensory observer, interaction leader) to encourage collaboration and active participation.

The game took place in the historic markets of Mercato del Capo and Mercato di Ballarò, where students followed the instructions on the worksheet

they observed colours and details, listened to the voices and calls of the vendors, recognised characteristic scents and smells, touched materials and surfaces (in accordance with the rules) and tasted typical street food, describing its flavours and ingredients.

During the activity, they documented the experience with photos, short videos and notes. The experience finished with a final reflection on the most significant meaning for understanding the identity of Palermo's markets.

The surprise was a special encounter with a theatre actor who improvised a beautiful storytelling on the spot about a child named Ulysses in Sicilian dialect. It was amazing to go back in time to the era of the Greek aedi and trace the roots of all peoples in a Sicilian cunto.

The activity allowed students to explore Palermo’s markets in an active and engaging way. By using their five senses, they observed details more carefully and described their experience with richer vocabulary.

They improved their speaking and listening skills while interacting with vendors and working in groups, developed teamwork and responsibility thanks to their specific roles and became more aware of local culture and traditions.
