PL26 CvC HA Guided tour of Płock

The main afternoon activity was a guided tour around Płock. All the group started a lively march from the Teacher Training Centre towards the Old Town. The participants learned about long history of the city (Płock actually used to be the capital of Poland in the mediaeval times), beginnings of Christianity in the area, which facilitated the development of the city and the bishopric as well as modern facts about Płock as an industrial centre – the headquarters of the biggest in Eastern and Central Europe petrochemical works and oil refinery. Among the monuments and landmarks that the guests could admire was the Neogothic Mariavit Cathedral – as Płock is the centre of this rare denomination, historical edifice of the City Hall with the Old Market Square and Easter attractions in the city, the mediaeval Cathedral erected in 1144 – the most important historical site in the city, the picturesque river bank located on the local scarp and the city bridges and pier. Jagiellonka teachers as the hosts of the programme prepared a short introduction and description of the visited venues. The participants enjoyed the walk and appreciated the opportunity to acquire new knowledge about the visited city, After the guided tour the participants could try local delicacies in the restaurant called “Thatched-Roofed Inn”.
Aims and skills targeted :
To acquire geographical, historical and cultural facts about Płock and the visited area.
To see the most significant historical and modern landmarks and highlights of the city.
To learn about Płock’s history and modern Times – the role of the city in the development of the area.
To integrate the group during a lovely walk along the city and its attractions.
To promote the knowledge of foreign languages as tools to express knowledge, views and ideas.
To improve language skills and teamwork, feel the spirit of international cultural exchange.
Results :
The historical walk along the most significant and characteristic landmarks of the city was a memorable chance to learn about history, geography and culture of the visited area. The participants could compare the region of Płock with their local venues and identify certain similarities and differences in the development of European culture in various parts of the continent. It was also an opportunity to practise and improve language skills as the guided tour was accompanied by a commentary in English. The visitors could feel the spirit of tolerance, international cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
