CC OIKOS BHL – From the Source to the Sea: Exploring the River
04 juin 2026During this school trip, participants undertook a field-based exploration of the River Lis, following its course from the source to the estuary. Throughout the route, they observed and identified a variety of native and invasive plant and animal species, gaining a deeper understanding of ecosystem dynamics, biodiversity conservation, and environmental challenges affecting riverine habitats. As part of the activity, participants collected a range of natural elements encountered along the route and compiled them in a “Nature Box”. This collection served as a learning tool, enabling participants to document their observations and reflect on the diversity of natural resources and habitats associated with the River Lis. At the conclusion of the educational trail, participants presented the contents of their Nature Boxes and shared their findings with the group. This final presentation encouraged reflection, knowledge exchange, and discussion on the importance of protecting native biodiversity and managing invasive species.
Results: Participants increased their knowledge of the biodiversity associated with the River Lis ecosystem; were able to distinguish between native and invasive species and explain their ecological significance; developed enhanced observation, environmental interpretation, and field research skills. They also demostrated greater awareness of the importance of conserving freshwater and coastal habitats; strengthened their communication and presentation skills through the sharing of observations and collected materials; [developed/felt] a stronger connection with nature and a greater sense of responsibility towards environmental protection and sustainable practices and finally (ou mantendo a estrutura original: and at least) produced and presented a Nature Box showcasing the diversity of natural elements observed throughout the river’s course, demonstrating the learning outcomes achieved during the activity.
