SB26 HA – KRUŠEDOL MONASTERY
22 mai 2026The visit to Krušedol Monastery, one of the most significant Serbian Orthodox monasteries, was designed as a large-scale educational workshop combining elements of historical memory, intercultural dialogue, and personal reflection. More than a traditional guided tour, the activity encouraged students to actively engage with the cultural and spiritual heritage of the site while reflecting on their own perceptions, experiences, and understanding of history.
Through observation tasks and a structured questionnaire, students were invited to connect their previous knowledge and experiences with the impressions gained during the visit. This process encouraged them to develop their perceptive and reflective skills, paying attention not only to historical facts but also to the atmosphere, aesthetics, and symbolism of the monastery complex. The peaceful surroundings, harmonious relationship between architecture and nature, and the rich artistic heritage of the site inspired numerous questions, discussions, and personal associations.
Particular interest was generated by the monastery’s history and its remarkable collection of frescoes. Students and teachers from traditionally Catholic and Protestant countries were eager to learn more about the Orthodox Christian tradition and its distinctive features. Discussions naturally developed around similarities and differences among the major branches of Christianity, creating valuable opportunities for intercultural learning and mutual understanding. At the same time, participants with an Orthodox background discovered new perspectives and subtle differences in religious practices and traditions, demonstrating that cultural learning can occur even within familiar contexts.
The shared experience of exploring the monastery and completing collaborative tasks strengthened connections among participants from different countries. By discussing their impressions and exchanging viewpoints, students and teachers gained a deeper appreciation of the idea of a common European heritage—one that is shaped by diverse historical, cultural, and religious influences. The activity highlighted how heritage sites can serve as spaces for dialogue, understanding, and the recognition of both similarities and differences among European cultures.
An important educational aspect of the visit was the opportunity to observe the delicate balance between nature and culture. Students reflected on how human beings respond to environments where cultural heritage and natural landscapes coexist in harmony, and why preserving this balance is essential for sustainable development and quality of life. Such reflections contribute to the development of responsible future citizens who understand the importance of protecting both cultural and natural heritage.
Krušedol Monastery itself stands as a powerful symbol of intercultural exchange and international cooperation throughout history. Its story reflects the interconnectedness of European peoples and cultures, including the support of Romanian noblemen in the reconstruction of the monastery after periods of devastation, as well as the historical influences that shaped the wider region of Fruška Gora. Through these examples, participants were able to recognize that cultural heritage is not confined by national borders but is often the result of centuries of cooperation, interaction, and shared historical experiences.
The visit provided a meaningful learning experience that combined history, culture, religion, sustainability, and intercultural dialogue, encouraging students to become more reflective, open-minded, and aware of the rich cultural diversity that forms the foundation of contemporary Europe.
