PL25 EC Preventing pets’ homelessness and a local animal adoption programme

Students elaborate on the reasons of animal homelessness and the current allarming data from the local animal shelters. Subsequently, after a discussion, in the groups of 6, students prepare a campaign to promote adoption of pets in collaboration with local authorities, animal shelter as well as primary and secondary schools. Students share the information on how to set up volunteer groups to collaborate effectively. All the ideas are discussed and a chart of a support network is created for the common use of all the schools involved in the project. Students in  groups of 6 prepare a short screenplay which aims at encouraging viewers to adopt homeless animals from local animal shelters.

 Having realized how student councils and school voluntary clubs can easily promote adoption of homeless animals from the shelters, students become willing to introduce similar solutions locally and finally start working on a global scale. Students deepen their understanding on how crucial the interaction with pets is for their mental health and well-being. They learn about animals physical and emotional needs and the importance of providing them with proper care. Participants of the project find it right to act on behalf of the ones that have no voice. Students gain awareness of the dangers of backyard pet breeding, they are discouraged from supporting such inhumane practises by not buying pets from them but rather preferring the adoption of a shelter animal.
