PT25 HA Medieval Leiria
27 mars 2025Leiria Castle is a monumental symbol of the city's medieval history. The visit to the Castle began with a trip in the panoramic elevator, with views over the city.
Inside the imposing walls, the students were able to observe traces of the various phases of occupation, from the military fortress to the royal palace.
The castle has an irregular polygonal layout, marked by the solidity of its defensive system (walls and towers) within which the Royal Palace, the Church of Santa Maria da Pena and the Torre de Menagem stand out.
King D. Dinis was the monarch who spent the most time in Leiria, together with his wife, Queen Saint Isabel, to whom the legend of the Miracle of the Roses is attributed.
The Castle underwent restoration and renovation works that enhanced its heritage, making it more inclusive and open to all citizens, through the construction of two mechanical accesses (elevator), with free access.
