The visit began with a historic description of the museum “Moinho de Papel”. The students learned that this place became known as such because it was the first building where the first known paper factory operated in the country, in the XIII century, and probably in the entire Iberian territory. The Mill is a museum dedicated to learning traditional arts and crafts related to paper and cereals.

All the tools related to traditional papermaking are available, with highlights including the press, the drying rack, the Dutch vat (used to grind paper using electrical energy), the guillotine and, of course, handmade paper. Leiria was the first place in the country to manufacture paper and one of the first Portuguese regions where the art of printing (typography) was established.

It uses textile waste as raw material to make paper and the factory reuses water in a closed circuit.

The students had the opportunity to make paper using recycled material, using ancient techniques of pressing and drying the leaves, when they participated in a workshop on the artisanal production of recycled paper, using paper pulp, which is composed of cotton, cut newspaper and water. This paper pulp was used to make the leaves and the process ended with drying on a clothesline.
