The activity was meant to explore the role of cellulose in the development of bioplastics, to describe the extraction and purification process of cellulose from natural sources,  to analyze the environmental benefits of using
recyclable biopolymers.

The practical work was carried out in the chemistry laboratory. Groups of three students carried out the extraction and purification of cellulose from fruit peels in
several stages. They compared cellulose-based bioplastics
with traditional plastics in terms of environmental impact. They identify some everyday uses of cellulose in eco-friendly products.

This study successfully demonstrated the extraction of cellulose from fruit peels using a cost-effective and
environmentally friendly method involving alkaline treatment and hydrogen peroxide bleaching. The
students were highly motivated by this activity, which took place in the school chemistry laboratory.
