Students watched a film about the revolution of April 25, 1974 called “Capitães de Abril” (“April Captains”) followed by a debate on this topic, highlighting the importance of protest music. This revolution, also called “the carnation revolution”, was a peaceful revolution that brought down the Estado Novo dictatorship, which had been in power for nearly 40 years. The revolution is named after the red carnations that were given to soldiers by citizens in a gesture of peace and support.

They collected the lyrics of protest songs associated with the revolution and their symbolic interpretation and they listened to the songs to better understand the feelings of those who wrote them.

Members of the community who experienced the period before democracy were invited to share and reflect together on the differences between dictatorship and democracy.
