After a short introduction to the history and significance of the Opera dei Pupi — the traditional Sicilian puppet theatre recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage — the students explored the main characters, epic stories, and visual elements typical of this popular tradition.

The students were then introduced to a simple technique for creating marionettes using cardboard and easily available materials such as paper, colors, string, and wooden sticks to animate the figures.

Working individually or in small groups, they designed and created their own puppets inspired by medieval heroes and the chivalric stories typical of Sicilian tradition.

The students broadened their knowledge of Sicilian pupi as an important part of Italy’s artistic and cultural heritage. They engaged with a traditional art form connected to epic narratives, values such as honor and justice, and historical storytelling.

Through the creation of cardboard marionettes, they developed technical, creative, and expressive skills, experimenting with shapes, colors, and movement. The activity promoted collaboration and inclusion, strengthening relationships among students of different nationalities.

The completed puppets represent a concrete and visible outcome of the learning process, which can be shared with the wider school community.
