CC Eco-detectives: Identifying river macroinvertebrates

As part of the Erasmus programme, participants took part in a workshop focused on the identification and classification of freshwater macroinvertebrates as biological indicators of water quality. During the activity, participants collected, observed and identified different groups of macroinvertebrates found in the River Lis ecosystem. They learned (ou learnt) about the ecological significance of these organisms and their use in the biological assessment of freshwater environments. Based on the diversity and abundance of the identified species, participants evaluated and classified the quality of the river water using recognised biological monitoring methods. The workshop combined scientific knowledge with practical fieldwork, promoting environmental awareness and a deeper understanding of aquatic ecosystems.

Results:

Participants acquired a better understanding of the ecological value of freshwater ecosystems and the importance of biological indicators in environmental monitoring. They developed practical skills in the identification and classification of macroinvertebrates and were able to apply this knowledge to assess water quality. Through the analysis of biological data collected during the workshop, participants classified the ecological status of the River Lis and gained a greater awareness of the factors affecting aquatic environments. They also strengthened their scientific literacy, environmental responsibility and commitment to the protection of natural resources.
