As part of the Erasmus Congress, participants attended a lecture delivered by a representative of a local environmental organization (OIKOS). The session addressed the increasing scarcity of natural resources resulting from population growth and rising global consumption. Environmental challenges associated with the unsustainable use of resources were explored, highlighting their impact on ecosystems and biodiversity. The lecture also examined the greenhouse effect and climate change, focusing on their causes, consequences and implications for both the environment and human well-being. Participants were encouraged to reflect on current environmental issues and to consider the role of individuals and communities in promoting sustainable development and environmental responsibility.

OIKOS is a regional Non-Governmental Environmental Organisation (NGO) founded in 1990. Officially recognised as a public utility entity, it has a main mission of preserving nature and regional heritage and promoting environmental sustainability. OIKOS works directly with local schools and communities to raise awareness about ecological issues. One of its key initiatives is the BHL Project (Bacia Hidrográfica do Lis), an environmental education program that actively engages thousands of students in monitoring, protecting, and valuing the Lis River basin and its surrounding coastal areas.

Results: Participants demonstrated a greater awareness of current environmental challenges, particularly those related to resource scarcity, population growth, the greenhouse effect and climate change. They developed a better understanding of the impact of human activities on ecosystems and biodiversity and were encouraged to adopt more sustainable and environmentally responsible behaviours.
